Pepeha / Whakapapa

Our Pepeha is a customary way of introducing oneself within Māori culture through the land, ancestral lines and ngakau ~ heart to those who you meet and connect with. Beginning any wānanga in this manner serves a number of purposes for this practice.

As Māori it is one way we make connections with others, understand someone’s history and ancestry.

Sharing our pepeha & Whakapapa can bring up different emotions for each person, so there’s no right and wrong about you engage with yours.

Moreover, our Whakapapa is our lineage and it is not isolated to our human lineage, yet also includes our lineage and connection to the highest heavens.

This is the ancient ancestry we explore in this sacred wananga
