Whakanoa: Beyond Energy, beyond spirit, beyond tapu, beyond utu.

Whakanoa is a concept in Māori that means, beyond Tapu, empty of energy, or beyond utu (words uttered against you that manipulate your life experience).

In a healing context, whakanoa denotes the healer holding a neutral, non-energetic position to release or activate certain centres or portals in the body while co-creating with the person in front of you.  Being whakanoa means not interacting with, or taking on the energies that are either channelling out of the client’s body, or the energies that may be coming through from other dimensional planes to heal or activate the person.

While training one of my RomiRomi students the other day, she noted that it took so much attention, focus and awareness to be able to be confident in being whakanoa while practicing RomiRomi. Her observation made me think and reminded me that some of the practices and energies we hold as healers are not always known wider than our practice, yet these concepts can help in both healing contexts and in our everyday life as well as for others who are doing healing work.

Being empty of energy means to be aware of spirit in a neutral way that allows energy to be directed.  This concept is important to understand before commencing healing work. As the healer, you are not allowing any energies being released from the client’s body to not attach to your body temple.  At the same time, you are not allowing the other-dimensional energies to come through your body in the spirit of healing.

At the same time, you are paying attention to how the client is physically faring. Is the client bracing? Are they releasing? Are they holding their breath? Are they operating at the physical level, when the energy release is occurring at the emotional level.

Being whakanoa can also work in our every day lives, in the office, supermarket or in any other places we don’t want to play with the energy that is present.  We are often feeling the environment for the energies that surround us.  As we become more aware, we tend to command our energy, rather than be influenced by the energy around us.  This is usually where discussions of energy stop. Yet, whakanoa is neither of these.  It is temporarily halting your energy exchange with the physical world.

It is the maintenance of your own energy solely within your own body temple.  It is the connection to Io, the divine source creator to allow energy to flow around into your own body, rather than focusing outwards.  This fuels you, doesn’t mix your energy with other’s energies and allows you to become increasingly discerning about the different energies that are found in different environments, or people.

Give it a try, and let me know how you go.
If you are interested in learning more about RomiRomi, MiriMiri, please let me know. I will be running a small and intimate group program at the end of the year.
